Outline #27: The Practice of Christian Love – Romans 12:9-21

Having called believers to present their bodies to God, be transformed by the renewing of their minds, and exercise their gifts humbly within the body of Christ (Romans 12:1–8), Paul now describes the character and conduct that should mark their relationships with others. Genuine Christian service is rooted in sincere love that rejects evil and embraces good. It expresses itself through diligent service, patience, prayer, generosity, hospitality, sympathy, humility, and a willingness to pursue peace. Most remarkably, believers are called to bless those who persecute them, refuse personal vengeance, and respond to evil with good. So Christian service extends beyond the local church to all people, even enemies, demonstrating the transforming power of the gospel in everyday relationships.

1. Why do you think genuine love is connected to both abhorring what is evil and clinging to what is good in Rom 12:9? What might this teach us about the relationship between love and biblical discernment?

2. Which of the commands in Rom 12:11-13 most challenges the way we naturally tend to live? What might obedience to it look like in everyday life?

3. What does Paul mean when he says: “Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble.”? How does pride interfere with Christian love and fellowship?

4. How does remembering God’s right to judge change the way we respond to wrongs committed against us?
