Purpose: Robertson mentions the view of Westcott, that
John wrote his Gospel
to prove the deity of our Lord, assuming His humanity,
whereas he wrote his first epistle
to prove His humanity, assuming His deity. [1]

[Manifest] To be manifested, in the Scriptural sense of the word, is
more than to “appear.” A person may “appear” in a false guise or without a
disclosure of what he truly is; to be manifested is to be revealed in one’s
true character; this is especially the meaning of phaneroo, see,
e.g., John 3:21; 1 Cor. 4:5; 2 Cor. 5:10–11; Eph. 5:13. [2]

[Take away] 9. airo (αἴρω, 142) signifies (a) “to raise up to
lift, to take upon oneself and carry what has been raised, physically” (its
most frequent use), or as applied to the mind, “to suspend, to keep in
suspense,” as in John 10:24, lit., “How long doth thou suspend our souls?”;
(b) “to take away what is attached to anything, to remove,” as of Christ,
in taking (or “bearing,” marg.) away the sin of the world, John 1:29;
Christ “was manifested to take away sins,” 1 John 3:5, where, not the

1 John 1:8 He denies the presence of the root of sin in himself, the principle
of sin

1 John 1:10 He denies the practicing of sins, the things we do, the fruits.

1 John 1:9 He acknowledges both and desires the restoration of the joy of
fellowship, to know again the smile of the Father against whom he has
sinned, as did David in Psalm 32 &51

1 John 1:9 “If we confess… he is faithful” confessing is to God, specific sins, hiding nothing. The word means “to say the same thing as another” and “thereby admit the truth of an accusation”. The light exposes, the eye of
God sees, the conscience accuses, the confessor does not deny, cover or
excuse. “The acknowledgement of specific sins gives evidence of sincerity”
(Vine). Generalizations will not suffice.

“In 1 John 1:9 it is paternal forgiveness as of a father, 1 John 2:12  it is
legal forgiveness as of a judge,” (Burdick).

Forgive AND cleanse!

The One who forgives us henceforth leads us away from unrighteousness into
righteousness: “He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of
righteousness for his name’s sake”{#Ps 23:3 } and 1 Corinthians 10:13 There
hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is
faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but
will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to
bear it. )

John so deeply drank into, used to His disciples (Jn 13:33) the term

John’s Gospel somewhat similarly the classification, “lambs, sheep, sheep,”
occurs.

which term he uses in addressing all his readers

5. parakletos (παράκλητος, 3875), lit., “called to one’s side,”
i.e., to one’s aid, is primarily a verbal adjective, and suggests the
capability or adaptability for giving aid. It was used in a court of justice
to denote a legal assistant, counsel for the defense, an advocate; then,
generally, one who pleads another’s cause, an intercessor, advocate, as in 1
John 2:1, of the Lord Jesus. In the widest sense, it signifies a “succorer,
comforter.” Christ was this to His disciples, by the implication of His word
“another (allos, “another of the same sort,” not heteros,
“different”) Comforter,” when speaking of the Holy Spirit, John 14:16. In
14:26; 15:26; 16:7 He calls Him “the Comforter.”¶ “Comforter” or “Consoler” corresponds to the name “Menahem,” given by the Hebrews to the Messiah.

PROPITIATION”the means by which sins are forgiven[15]

2. hilasmos (ἱλασμός, 2434), akin to hileos (“merciful,
propitious”), signifies “an expiation, a means whereby sin is covered and
remitted.” It is used in the NT of Christ Himself as “the propitiation,” in
1 John 2:2 and 4:10, signifying that He Himself, through the expiatory
sacrifice of His death, is the personal means by whom God shows mercy to
the sinner who believes on Christ as the One thus provided. In the former
passage He is described as “the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours
only, but also for the whole world.” The italicized addition in the kjv, “
the sins of,ʷ gives a wrong interpretation. What is indicated is
that provision is made for the whole world, so that no one is, by divine
predetermination, excluded from the scope of God’s mercy; the efficacy of
the “propitiation,” however, is made actual for those who believe. In 4:10,
the fact that God “sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins,” is
shown to be the great expression of God’s love toward man, and the reason
why Christians should love one another.

The differences between ginosko (No. 1) and oida demand
consideration: (a) ginosko, frequently suggests inception or
progress in “knowledge,” while oida suggests fullness of
“knowledge,” e.g., John 8:55, “ye have not known Him” (ginosko),
i.e., begun to “know,” “but I know Him” (oida), i.e., “know Him
