The church does not replace Israel (the final section of the chapter will make that clear) but Jew and Gentile are now given equal standing, with no distinction, in this new entity &#8211; the Church, the body of Christ. Paul uses the allegory of the olive tree \u2013 not as a symbol of Israel nor a symbol of the Church, but as a symbol of Divine Blessing and Divine Purpose \u2013 Israel were the original, natural branches (Rom 11:17, 21) \u2013 but now Gentiles (wild olive branches \u2013 Rom 11:17) have been grafted in and enjoy the full benefits of Divine purpose and blessing. Paul warns about arrogance on the part of Gentile believers, and ends the section by assuring that the natural branches will be \u201cre-grafted\u201d in again. This theme will be the main subject of next week\u2019s study in the final section of the chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Outline\"><\/span><strong>Outline<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 11:11-15 \u2013 Israel\u2019s Temporary Fall Opens the Door to Blessing for Gentiles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Israel\u2019s fall is not final (Rom 11:11-12) \u2013 Paul, for the second time in the chapter, uses a powerful rebuttal to refute the idea that God is finished with Israel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paul alludes to a future day of \u201cfulness\u201d for Israel (Rom 11:12) and speaks of \u201ctheir acceptance\u201d (Rom 11:15) \u2013 both clear indications that God has a future plan for Israel and will literally fulfil his covenant promises to them. These references point to a future day of Millennial glory when Christ shall reign as the promised \u201cson of David\u201d and Israel will be the conduit through which his administration will rule over the entire globe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 11:16-21 \u2013 The Allegory of the Olive Tree<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Divine purpose and blessing \u2013 promised to Israel through unconditional covenant \u2013 \u201cthe root\u201d probably refers back to the original Abrahamic covenant \u2013 the \u201cnatural branches\u201d refer to those ethnically linked to Abraham, but who through unbelief (Rom 11:20) were broken off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The \u201cwild olive tree\u201d refers to Gentile believers in the present age \u2013 who have been brought into the direct stream of divine purpose and blessing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A serious warning against arrogance and any sense of entitlement on the part of Gentiles (Rom 11:18-21).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 11:22-24 \u2013 The Goodness and Severity of God<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>God\u2019s goodness is highlighted towards those who have been grafted in <br>(\u201ctoward you\u201d Rom 11:22) \u2013 but also his severity on those who, through unbelief, were cut off<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Important to note that \u201cbelief\u201d or \u201cfaith\u201d is what counts with God \u2013 not entitlement or arrogance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_PointsQuestions_for_Discussion\"><\/span><strong>Key Points\/Questions for Discussion<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. Paul makes a distinction between \u201cstumble\u201d and \u201cfall\u201d in Rom 11:11? How are we to understand that distinction?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. Why is it important to see that the \u201cOlive Tree\u201d in the allegory represents the stream of Divine purpose and blessing \u2013 and not \u201cthe Church\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. From a practical standpoint \u2013 how can we apply the principle of \u201cspiritual jealousy\u201d Paul speaks about relative to Israel\u2019s National attitude towards Gentiles being blessed? Is there anything in my life that would cause observers to be \u201cjealous\u201d for the peace and joy I have found in Christ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4.
