Are all of God\u2019s OT promises and covenants voided by the gospel now being preached? Have God\u2019s purposes for the Church permanently replaced or fulfilled his promises to Israel? Our next three studies, taking us through chapter 11, will deal directly with this question. Does Israel as a national entity still have a future in divine purpose, or has God cast away his people? Paul\u2019s emphatic answer in Rom 11:1 (\u201cCertainly not\u201d in NKJV or \u201cGod forbid\u201d in KJV or \u201cBy no means\u201d in ESV) shows how importantly he views this subject. God\u2019s honour and God\u2019s faithfulness are at stake \u2013 can God be trusted to keep his word?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Outline\"><\/span><strong>Outline<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 11:1-6 \u2013 God has not cast away his people<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Paul\u2019s emphatic rebuttal to the question \u201cHas God cast away his people\u201d \u2013 Rom 11:1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paul\u2019s own conversion is proof of this \u2013 individual Jewish people were being saved \u2013 Rom 11:1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Example from Elijah\u2019s day \u2013 Elijah thought he was the only one left \u2013 God says \u201cno\u201d \u2013 he had a faithful remnant \u2013 Rom 11:2-4<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>God presently has a remnant of Israel that are being saved by grace &#8211; Rom 11:5<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cGrace\u201d and \u201cworks\u201d as a basis for attaining divine favour are totally incompatible \u2013 Rom 11:6 <br>(a frequent theme in this epistle!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 11:7-10 \u2013 National Israel has not received it\u2019s promised blessing \u2013 but a remnant are being blessed by grace<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Judicial blindness has been placed on national Israel because of their hardness and rejection of Christ (Paul quotes from Deuteronomy 29:4, Isaiah 29:10 and Psalm 69:22-23)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A remnant is receiving blessing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_PointsQuestions_for_Discussion\"><\/span><strong>Key Points\/Questions for Discussion<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why is Paul so emphatic in his answer in Rom 11:1? Why is a literal understanding of God\u2019s OT promises and covenants so essential to defending God\u2019s faithfulness and trustworthiness?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can we be encouraged by the example from Elijah\u2019s day that Paul provides? Maintaining testimony is a challenge and a responsibility \u2013 but it ultimately doesn\u2019t all rest on us \u2013 God has (and will) maintain a testimony and will accomplish his purposes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do we distinguish between individual Jewish people (like Paul) who are saved and are in the church and the future blessing of Israel as a national entity <br>(described later in this chapter)?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does \u201cjudicial blindness\u201d preclude human responsibility? Are there Biblical examples of how human unbelief can eventually lead to judicial blindness?
