Paul provides answers to two key questions \u2013 <br>(1) Are God\u2019s sovereign choices unfair? (Rom 9:14-18), <br>(2) If God is ultimately sovereign, then how can we be held responsible? (Rom 9:19-24). The section then concludes with Paul pointing out that OT prophecy anticipated (and predicted) Gentile inclusion in divine blessing along with the preservation of a remnant in Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Outline\"><\/span><strong>Outline<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 9:14-18 \u2013 God\u2019s Sovereignty in no way diminishes his righteousness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\u2022 God is perfectly free to show mercy to whomever he will \u2013 he owes mercy to nobody \u2013 but it is his perfect prerogative to show mercy when he chooses (Exodus 33 \u2013 Israel after the Golden Calf incident)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\u2022 Example of Pharaoh \u2013 Pharoah hardened his own heart \u2013 then God judicially hardened it \u2013 all for the purpose of showing his power throughout the earth. God can use evil leaders to further his purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 9:19-24 \u2013 The Potter and the Clay<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\u2022 The creature doesn\u2019t have the right to question the creator as to his sovereign purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\u2022 This passage is not so much dealing with the philosophical question of the origin of evil \u2013 but it is pointing out that God uses its existence to demonstrate his wrath, to make his power known, and to display the riches of his mercy and grace. Humankind faces judgment and wrath as a result of their own choices \u2013 not a Divine predetermination. The fact that God chooses to show mercy to some who don\u2019t deserve it does not make him unrighteous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 9:25-29 \u2013 The Calling of the Gentiles and the Preservation of a Remnant in Israel was foretold<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\u2022 The OT anticipated, in a general way, that Gentiles would be blessed \u2013 although it did not specifically describe the church age in which Jew and Gentile would be brought together on the same ground with no distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\u2022 As chapter 11 will show, Israel still possesses national covenant promises that remain to be fulfilled, and will be fulfilled, to a believing remnant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_PointsQuestions_for_Discussion\"><\/span><strong>Key Points\/Questions for Discussion<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. Paul anticipates the critics\u2019 question in Rom 9:14 \u2013 \u201cHow can God be righteous if he chooses some for blessing while passing over others \u2013 without regard for their merit or actions?\u201d How does this passage help us answer such a criticism?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. Why is it important to recognize the sequential order of \u201cPharoah hardening his own heart\u201d and \u201cThe Lord hardening Pharoah\u2019s heart\u201d? Does God arbitrarily determine who will perish?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. Does God\u2019s sovereignty remove human responsibility for their choices? (examples would include Pharoah, Israel as a nation)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4. Why is it important to note the consistency in God\u2019s promises by pointing out that his intention was always to include Gentiles in blessing while not compromising his covenant promises to the Nation of Israel?
