But first, in this fourth section (Rom 9:1\u201311:36) Paul will deal very directly with <strong>God\u2019s purposes for the Nation of Israel<\/strong>. In the first 8 chapters he has outlined God\u2019s amazing purposes, his power and his faithfulness \u2013 now he\u2019ll deal with the question \u201cWhat about all God\u2019s promises in the OT to Israel? Are they all void now? If they\u2019ve all been set aside \u2013 then is God really faithful? Can He really be trusted?\u201d Paul will show in these three chapters that God is indeed faithful \u2013 and his promises to Israel still stand and will be fulfilled. He\u2019ll deal with Israel\u2019s past in chapter 9 \u2013 their present in chapter 10 \u2013 and their future in chapter 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Outline\"><\/span><strong>Outline<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rm 9:1-5 \u2013 Paul\u2019s Genuine Love and Deep Sorrow for Israel<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Paul\u2019s grief for his \u201ckinsmen according to the flesh\u201d \u2013 i.e. ethnic Israel (Rom 9:1-3)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Israel\u2019s unique national privilege (Rom 9:4-5) \u2013 eight specific privileges unique to Israel<\/br> \u2013 culminating in the greatest of all \u2013 Christ came from Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 9:6-9 \u2013 God\u2019s Word has not Failed \u2013 God Sovereignly determines the line of blessing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Key statement at start of Rom 9:6 \u201cit is not that the word of God has taken no effect\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Not all the seed of Abraham were children of promise \u2013 as seen with Isaac and Ishmael<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 9:10-13 \u2013 God\u2019s Sovereign Choice \u2013 as seen with Jacob and Esau (Israel &amp; Edom)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 God\u2019s choice was not based on works or merit or worth \u2013 it was based on his own sovereign purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Jacob and Esau represent two nations \u2013 Jacob\u2019s name would be changed to Israel and the \u201cchildren of Israel\u201d would be his descendants. Esau\u2019s descendants would be the Nation of Edom (Rebekah was told \u201cTwo nations are in your womb\u201d Gen 25:23)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Quotation from Malachi 1:2-3 \u201cJacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_PointsQuestions_for_Discussion\"><\/span><strong>Key Points\/Questions for Discussion<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. Why is Paul so adamant in defending God\u2019s sovereignty and emphasizing that his promises to Israel have not been broken? (hint \u2013 God\u2019s faithfulness is tied to his sovereignty)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. Do these three chapters (Rm 9:9-11) suggest that the church today has replaced Israel in divine purpose? Or do they refute that idea? Does God still have a future for \u201cnational\u201d Israel \u2013 i.e. their purpose as a nation \u2013 not just individual salvation for individual people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. Do individual Jewish people today have any special standing with God? Is there any difference today in God\u2019s purposes between Jews and Gentiles?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4. How do we understand the seemingly very strong language used of Jacob &amp; Esau (\u201cJacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated\u201d). Can a loving God hate?
