In Rom 4:1-2,3-4,5-6,7-8 he showed that Abraham\u2019s faith was apart from works. In Rom 4:9-10,11,12 he showed that it was apart from circumcision since it took place before circumcision was introduced. In our passage tonight he will show in Rom 4:13,14-15 that it was apart from the law and in Rom 4:16-25 that Abraham\u2019s faith was in God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Outline\"><\/span><strong>Outline<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 4:13,14-15 \u2013 God\u2019s promise is by Faith, not the Law<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>God did not promise Abraham blessing \u201cif he kept the law\u201d \u2013 there was no such condition. (Rom 4:13)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If righteousness comes by keeping the law, then the promise is meaningless (Rom 4:14)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The purpose of the law is explained (Rom 4:15) \u2013 it condemns us and highlights our plight \u2013 facing wrath<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 4: 16,17 \u2013 God\u2019s promise extends by grace to all<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>God\u2019s promise by grace extends, on the same basis, to all without distinction \u2013 both those under the law (Jews) and those not under the law (Gentiles). Abraham is father to all who are of faith.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 4:18-22 \u2013 Analysis of Abraham\u2019s Faith (a case study)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Abraham hoped against hope (Rom 4:18)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abraham faced reality honestly \u2013 he was not delusional or in<br>denial (Rom 4:19)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abraham had unwavering trust in God (Rom 4:20-21)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abraham&#8217;s faith was counted to him for righteousness (Rom 4:22)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rom 4:23-25 \u2013 All of this applies to all of us<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These verses directly apply the example of Abraham to us in the NT age \u2013 he believed in God &#8211; how much more should we, now that we have the added benefit of knowing that God \u201craised up Jesus our Lord from the dead\u201d?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_PointsQuestions_for_Discussion\"><\/span><strong>Key Points\/Questions for Discussion<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why is it important to understand that favour with God is based on grace and comes through faith \u2013 rather than being based on merit and coming through works?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In what sense is Abraham the father of all believers? Does this mean that all distinction between Jews and Gentiles is eliminated forever, and God\u2019s promises to Abraham are now spiritually fulfilled in the church and were never meant to be literally understood?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In what sense is \u201cblind faith\u201d a totally unbiblical concept?<br>Abraham\u2019s faith was not blind \u2013 it was confidence in a God whose character and capability Abraham knew (Rom 4:17,21). Why is this so important for us to remember today?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In what sense did Abraham \u201cgive glory to God\u201d (Rom 4:20). How can we do the same today?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rom 4:25 describes \u201cJesus our Lord\u201d being \u201cdelivered for our<br>offences\u201d and being \u201craised again for our justification\u201d.
