Purpose: Robertson mentions the view of Westcott, that John wrote his Gospel to prove the deity of our Lord, assuming His humanity, whereas he wrote his first epistle to prove His humanity, assuming His deity. [1]<\/sup><\/a>

 [Manifest]      To be manifested, in the Scriptural sense of the word, is more than to \u201cappear.\u201d A person may \u201cappear\u201d in a false guise or without a disclosure of what he truly is; to be manifested is to be revealed in one\u2019s true character; this is especially the meaning of phaneroo<\/em>, see, e.g., John 3:21; 1 Cor. 4:5; 2 Cor. 5:10\u201311; Eph. 5:13. In 1Jo 1:7\u2009 the cleansing is by the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son. In Eph 5:26 the cleansing is by the washing of water by the word of God.
Ephesians 5:26 (The Church) That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, [8]<\/sup><\/a>
Vs. 8 He denies the presence of the root of sin in himself, the principle of sin
Vs. 10 He denies the practicing of sins, the things we do, the fruits.
Vs. 9 He acknowledges both and desires the restoration of the joy of fellowship, to know again the smile of the Father against whom he has sinned, as did David in Psalm 32 &51
Vs. 9 \u201cIf we confess\u2026  he is faithful\u201d confessing is to God, specific sins, hiding nothing. The word means \u201cto say the same thing as another\u201d and \u201cthereby admit the truth of an accusation\u201d. The light exposes, the eye of God sees, the conscience accuses, the confessor does not deny, cover or excuse. \u201cThe acknowledgement of specific sins gives evidence of sincerity\u201d (Vine). Generalizations will not suffice.
\u201cIn 1Jo 1:9 it is paternal forgiveness as of a father, 1Jo 2:12\u2009 it is legal forgiveness as of a judge,\u201d (Burdick). [9]<\/sup><\/a>
Forgive AND cleanse!
The One who forgives us henceforth leads us away from unrighteousness into righteousness: \u201cHe restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name\u2019s sake\u201d{#Ps 23:3\u2009} and  1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. )
John 13:10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

Chp2:Vs.1 –<\/strong> <\/em>little children<\/strong>\u2014Greek,<\/em> \u201clittle sons,<\/em>\u201d or \u201cdear sons and daughters\u201d; not the same Greek<\/em> as in 1 Jn 2:13, \u201clittle children,<\/em>\u201d \u201cinfants\u201d (in age and standing). He calls all to whom he writes, \u201clittle sons<\/em>\u201d (1 Jn 2:1, Greek;<\/em> 1 Jn 2:28; 3:18; 4:4; 5:21); but only in 1 Jn 2:13, 18 he uses the term \u201clittle children,\u201d or \u201cinfants.\u201d Our Lord, whose Spirit John so deeply drank into, used to His disciples (Jn 13:33) the term \u201clittle sons,\u201d or dear sons and daughters;<\/em> but in Jn 21:5, \u201clittle children.\u201d It is an undesigned coincidence with the Epistle here, that in John\u2019s Gospel somewhat similarly the classification, \u201clambs, sheep, sheep,\u201d occurs.
– paidion<\/em>  it is used of an infant just born, John 16:21,  1 John 2:13, 18; there it is to be distinguished from teknia<\/em>, (vv. 1, 12, 28: see teknia<\/em> )which term he uses in addressing all his readers [11]<\/sup><\/a>
5. parakletos<\/em> (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2, 3875), lit., \u201ccalled to one\u2019s side,\u201d i.e., to one\u2019s aid, is primarily a verbal adjective, and suggests the capability or adaptability for giving aid. It was used in a court of justice to denote a legal assistant, counsel for the defense, an advocate; then, generally, one who pleads another\u2019s cause, an intercessor, advocate, as in 1 John 2:1, of the Lord Jesus. In the widest sense, it signifies a \u201csuccorer, comforter.\u201d Christ was this to His disciples, by the implication of His word \u201canother (allos<\/em>, \u201canother of the same sort,\u201d not heteros<\/em>, \u201cdifferent\u201d) Comforter,\u201d when speaking of the Holy Spirit, John 14:16. In 14:26; 15:26; 16:7 He calls Him \u201cthe Comforter.\u201d\u00b6 \u201cComforter\u201d or \u201cConsoler\u201d corresponds to the name \u201cMenahem<\/em>,\u201d given by the Hebrews to the Messiah.

PROPITIATION <\/strong>\u201dthe means by which sins are forgiven[15]<\/sup><\/a>\u201d
2. hilasmos<\/em> (\u1f31\u03bb\u03b1\u03c3\u03bc\u03cc\u03c2, 2434), akin to hileos<\/em> (\u201cmerciful, propitious\u201d), signifies \u201can expiation, a means whereby sin is covered and remitted.\u201d It is used in the NT of Christ Himself as \u201cthe propitiation,\u201d in 1 John 2:2 and 4:10, signifying that He Himself, through the expiatory sacrifice of His death, is the personal means by whom God shows mercy to the sinner who believes on Christ as the One thus provided. In the former passage He is described as \u201cthe propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.\u201d The italicized addition in the kjv, \u201cthe sins of,\u02b7<\/em> gives a wrong interpretation. What is indicated is that provision is made for the whole world, so that no one is, by divine predetermination, excluded from the scope of God\u2019s mercy; the efficacy of the \u201cpropitiation,\u201d however, is made actual for those who believe. In 4:10, the fact that God \u201csent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins,\u201d is shown to be the great expression of God\u2019s love toward man, and the reason why Christians should love one another.[16]<\/sup><\/a>  See also Romans 3:25
